Sculptra® treatment FAQs
your questions answered
You will start to see a difference from about 8 weeks and the maximum results are seen at about 9 months. Small maintenance treatments should be carried out once or twice a year.
Although it takes a while for the full effects of Sculptra® to develop, the results have been shown to last up to and over 2 years from the first injection session, whereas most dermal fillers last from for about 6-12 months.
Sculptra is a biocompatible aesthetic injectable designed to combat signs of ageing. Unlike traditional fillers, Sculptra stimulates your body’s natural collagen production, gradually restoring facial volume and reducing wrinkles.
Dermal Fillers are gels (usually made of hyaluronic acid) of differing viscosities that are injected into or underneath the skin to give an instant mechanical lift to the tissue, improving the contours of the face and smoothing the appearance of wrinkles and folds.
The key difference between Sculptra® and Dermal Fillers is that the results from Sculptra® take time to develop, from a few weeks to 9 months, whereas the results from HA fillers are immediate. For many people, this gradual change is something that they really prefer. It feels more natural, and the changes that are seen are as a result of growth of your own native collagen. The whole face is treated, not just one specific area such as cheeks or jowls, giving harmonious, balanced contours that reflect light and convey a more healthy and youthful appearance.
Sculptra® has been used for years in the NHS as a treatment for facial fat loss, so its biocompatibility and safety has been well demonstrated. It is made of poly L lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible polymer.
How Sculptra® restores your natural features:
Sculptra® (Poly L Lactic Acid) is mixed with water and injected deeply underneath the skin, where it stimulates fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are found in skin, fat, muscle and bone, (ie all the layers of the face,) and are responsible for making the supporting framework of collagen and elastin that holds all the structures and cells together in place. This activity of the fibroblasts produces a slow and beautiful restoration of your natural features.
For many people there is no one specific feature that stands out as something they want to fix. When asked what they are specifically concerned about, they say, ‘Oh everything! Please can you just make me look a little bit better? But I don’t want to look as though I’ve had anything done.” These are perfect Sculptra® patients. These patients are noticing the general deflation of the face that comes with age, (and sometimes with weight loss), and the resultant drooping and sagging that gives the appearance of fatigue or sadness.
