Boost your smile confidence and reveal less gum
in London, Oxford & The South West
Usually, the lip sits just above the top of the teeth. However, in some people, there is a disproportionate gum tissue to teeth ratio. A gummy smile, or ‘excessive gingival show’ – to give it its medical term – may be caused by a number of factors. These can include problems with the teeth, lips and the gum tissue itself. Perhaps around 15% of women and 4% of men suffer with this condition. However, the numbers are probably much higher because most people do not present to doctors for correction. It can leave them feeling self-conscious about their smile.
In many cases a gummy smile may be amenable to treatment with BOTOX® or Azzalure®. A couple of carefully placed injections weaken the activity of one of the smile muscles, which allows the upper lip to cover more of the gum.

Gummy smile FAQs
your questions answered
Generally, a smile is considered “gummy” if more than 3-4 millimeters of gum tissue is visible, but ultimately, the classification of a gummy smile often depends on individual facial proportions and aesthetic preferences.
BOTOX® and Azzalure® effectively combat gummy smiles by targeting the hyperactive muscles responsible for excessive gum exposure. These neurotoxins work by temporarily paralysing the upper lip elevator muscles, reducing their contraction during smiling. When strategically injected, they allow the upper lip to relax and cover more of the gum line.
Dr Fitzgerald, an expert in aesthetic treatments, offers personalised consultations to assess your suitability for these procedures. During your appointment, she’ll evaluate your facial structure, discuss your concerns, and determine the most appropriate treatment plan. This initial assessment is essential to ensure safe and effective results, tailored to your unique needs.
Results from gummy smile treatment usually become noticeable within 2 to 4 days after the procedure, with full effects visible around 2 weeks post-treatment. However, individual experiences may vary depending on factors such as muscle strength and metabolism. The subtle relaxation of the upper lip muscles gradually reduces excessive gum exposure when smiling.
The effects should last for approximately 3 months. As the body gradually metabolises the BOTOX® or Azzalure® you may notice the treatment’s effects wearing off, and your smile gradually returning to its pre-treatment appearance. Regular follow-up treatments are usually recommended to maintain the desired aesthetic results.
Gummy smile treatment offers very natural-looking results. By precisely injecting small amounts of BOTOX® or Azzalure®, your upper lip’s movement will be subtly adjusted, reducing gum visibility without compromising your smile’s authenticity.
